The capability of oral and maxillofacial surgeons to administer intravenous sedation to patients is a benefit not allotted to most physicians, and it is therefore imperative that this practice be held in high regard by our profession. While outpatient ambulatory sedation can carry a number of adverse side effects in the general adult population, it is especially known to be a potentially high-risk procedure within the pediatric population, notably in patients less than 13 years of age. Pediatric patients not only have anatomical differences contributing to this escalation in unpredictability, but also demonstrate a number of physiological variations precipitating a low tolerance for error.
