Postoperative pain management after third molar surgery is an increasing concern as the opioid crisis causes surgeons to rethink prescribing practices. Reducing the amount of opioid prescribed for moderate to severe pain is now a goal of patient management. Preoperative low-dose ketamine has proven effective in reducing the need for postoperative opioid analgesics in cervical spine and urologic surgery (1, 2). This investigation employed a similar preoperative dosing schedule to determine if there was a demonstrable analgesic effect that would mitigate opioid use in third molar surgery.
