Is Latin America Ready to Identify Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma in Breast Implants Patients? Regional Encounter During the National Plastic Surgery Meeting in Cancun, Mexico

Abstract

Introduction

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma associated with breast implants is receiving increased attention. Most cases have been reported in Europe, North America (USA and Canada), Australia and New Zealand. Fewer cases have been reported in Latin America (including Mexico), Africa and Asia.

Methods

This report was delivered during our national plastic surgery meeting in Cancun in May 2017. Before the meeting, two participants reviewed the literature. The review was performed using the following information sources: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Fisterra, Google Scholar and LILACS, with entries from 1980 to August 2015 in several languages (English, Spanish, French and Portuguese). The results were revealed during the meeting to the other participants. The consensus was divided into two parts. The first part included an open-ended question regarding the incidence and prevalence of the problem. The second part included clinical scenarios with different items that were rated by the participants. After this activity, accordance among the responses was evaluated.

Results

Seven cases were reported during the meeting (3 from Mexico, 3 from Chile and 1 from Argentina). Fifty percent of the participants reported consulting with guidelines and clinical centers to help with potential cases. Most agreed that further studies must be done in cases of chronic seroma where the capsule plays an important role.

Discussion

A current debate exists about the incidence of this problem in Latin America because we did not report the same number of cases as Europe, Australia or North America. More studies are required to determine the differences among reports in Latin America.

Conclusion

Most representatives agreed that further studies must be done. Concern is increasing, and the problem is known. Other factors involved may be considered, and the problem must not be ignored.

Six-Position, Frontal View Photography in Blepharoplasty: A Simple Method

Abstract

Background

Photography plays a pivotal role in patient education, photo-documentation, preoperative planning and postsurgical evaluation in plastic surgeries. It has long been serving as a bridge that facilitated communication not only between patients and doctors, but also among plastic surgeons from different countries. Although several basic principles and photographic methods have been proposed, there is no internationally accepted photography that could provide both static and dynamic information in blepharoplasty. In this article, we introduced a novel six-position, frontal view photography for thorough assessment in blepharoplasty.

Methods

From October 2013 to January 2017, 1068 patients who underwent blepharoplasty were enrolled in our clinical research. All patients received six-position, frontal view photography. Pictures were taken of the patients looking up, looking down, squeezing, smiling, looking ahead and with closed eyes. Conventionally, frontal view photography only contained the last two positions. Then, both novel six-position photographs and conventional two-position photographs were used to appraise postsurgical outcomes.

Results

Compared to conventional two-position, frontal view photography, six-position, frontal view photography can provide more detailed, thorough information about the eyes. It is of clinical significance in indicating underlying adhesion of skin/muscle/fat according to individual's features and assessing preoperative and postoperative dynamic changes and aesthetic outcomes.

Conclusion

Six-position, frontal view photography is technically uncomplicated while exhibiting static, dynamic and detailed information of the eyes. This innovative method is favorable in eye assessment, especially for revision blepharoplasty. We suggest using six-position, frontal view photography to obtain comprehensive photographs.

Cavernous Hemangioma Between the Elastomer and Fibrous Capsule of a Breast Implant

Abstract

Hemangiomas are described in many locations, but breast hemangioma (BH) is rare, accounting for only 0.4% of all breast tumors. These tumors are difficult to diagnose preoperatively using conventional imaging modalities because they lack pathognomonic characteristics. Mammographic and sonographic appearances of BH were described in just a few case reports, and breast implant-related hemangiomas are even rarer. We report a case of the tumor arising in an atypical location—between the elastomer and fibrous capsule of a breast implant.

Brazilian Consensus Recommendation on the Use of Polymethylmethacrylate Filler in Facial and Corporal Aesthetics

Abstract

Background

Considering that aesthetic benefits can be obtained with the use of permanent filling materials, this work focuses on the development of a consensus regarding the facial and corporal use of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) filler in Brazil.

Methods

A questionnaire regarding PMMA treatment, which included items on the main indication, application site, volume of product applied, criteria for selection of the material, complications, contraindications, and individual professional experience, was distributed to the Expert Group members. In addition, the responses were summarized, constituting the starting point for the debate regarding the use of PMMA-based fillers on The First Brazilian PMMA Symposium to create a guideline to be followed in PMMA facial and corporal treatments.

Results

This survey involved 87,371 cases. PMMA treatment is recommended for restorative and aesthetic purposes in facial and corporal cases, particularly for facial balance. PMMA 30% filler is recommended in specific facial sites (nose, mentum, mandible angle, zygomatic arc, and malar). PMMA filler is contraindicated in other sites (lips) regardless of concentration. With regard to facial treatment, the juxtaperiostal is the application plane most recommended. For PMMA corporal application, intramuscular is the application plane most indicated, while intradermal and justadermal planes are contraindicated. The submuscular plane application is relative to PMMA filler concentration. The experts also inquired regarding the amount of PMMA recommended in each corporal site (50 mL in the calf, 100–150 mL in the gluteal region).

Conclusion

These recommendations provide a guideline for physicians, supporting them to perform safe and efficacious treatment with PMMA fillers.

Breast-Conserving Surgery with Immediate Autologous Fat Grafting Reconstruction: Oncologic Outcomes

Abstract

Introduction

Autologous fat grafting (AFG; lipofilling, lipografting) has been used in delayed breast reconstruction. Recently, it has also been investigated as an alternative for immediate reconstruction in patients submitted to breast-conserving surgery (BCS). Although good aesthetic results have been reported, the oncologic safety of the procedure remains under investigation. This article aims to assess oncologic outcomes of patients submitted to BCS with immediate AFG reconstruction.

Methods

This study consisted of 65 patients undergoing BCS with AFG between January 2010 and January 2017. They were closely followed after surgery for a median period of 40.8 months. Locoregional and systemic recurrences were the primary endpoints of this study.

Results

Ten patients developed cancer recurrence (15.4%). The median time for recurrence was 58.9 months. Only two patients presented locoregional recurrence (LRR) (3.07%). Five patients had systemic recurrence (7.69%), and three had both systemic and LRR (4.61%). Median disease-free survival (DFS) was 42.2 months, and overall survival (OV) was 44.3 months. Recurrences were significantly associated with the number of metastatic axillary lymph nodes detected.

Conclusion

Oncologic outcomes of immediate AFG are similar to the results previously reported in BCS without AFG. Locoregional and systemic recurrences are associated with the presence of axillary metastases.

Prospective multicentre evaluation and refinement of an analysis tool for magnetic resonance spectroscopy of childhood cerebellar tumours

Abstract

Background

A tool for diagnosing childhood cerebellar tumours using magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy peak height measurement has been developed based on retrospective analysis of single-centre data.

Objective

To determine the diagnostic accuracy of the peak height measurement tool in a multicentre prospective study, and optimise it by adding new prospective data to the original dataset.

Materials and methods

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and single-voxel MR spectroscopy were performed on children with cerebellar tumours at three centres. Spectra were processed using standard scanner software and peak heights for N-acetyl aspartate, creatine, total choline and myo-inositol were measured. The original diagnostic tool was used to classify 26 new tumours as pilocytic astrocytoma, medulloblastoma or ependymoma. These spectra were subsequently combined with the original dataset to develop an optimised scheme from 53 tumours in total.

Results

Of the pilocytic astrocytomas, medulloblastomas and ependymomas, 65.4% were correctly assigned using the original tool. An optimized scheme was produced from the combined dataset correctly assigning 90.6%. Rare tumour types showed distinctive MR spectroscopy features.

Conclusion

The original diagnostic tool gave modest accuracy when tested prospectively on multicentre data. Increasing the dataset provided a diagnostic tool based on MR spectroscopy peak height measurement with high levels of accuracy for multicentre data.

The rare solid fetal lung lesion with T2-hypointense components: prenatal imaging findings with postnatal pathological correlation

Abstract

Background

At fetal MR, congenital lung lesions are usually T2 hyperintense with respect to normal lung parenchyma. Some lesions, however, demonstrate unusual patterns of T2 hypointensity, sometimes in a rosette-like pattern. These lesions usually present a diagnostic conundrum.

Objective

To evaluate the imaging findings and pathological characterization of fetal solid lung lesions with elements showing T2-hypointense signal with respect to lung.

Materials and methods

This is a retrospective study of lung lesions with elements showing T2 hypointensity treated prenatally and postnatally at our center and with available pathological evaluation. Prenatal imaging evaluation included US and MR; postnatal evaluation consisted of pathological examination of the lesion. We also performed prenatal and postnatal chart review.

Results

Six cases met study criteria. Areas of decreased echogenicity/T2-hypointense signal were more conspicuous at MR than US. At pathology, these areas correlated with immature parenchymal development and increased mesenchymal tissue. Five of these lesions were congenital pulmonary airway malformations (CPAM); one was a congenital peribronchial myofibroblastic tumor (CPMT). The lesions did not significantly change in size after steroid administration. They were all large in volume and were associated with increased amniotic fluid. All cases of CPAM underwent premature delivery (one of them weeks after fetal surgical resection of the lesion for worsening hydrops); the fetus with CPMT was delivered at term. The neonate with CPMT succumbed shortly after birth secondary to lung hypoplasia; the remaining five neonates survived.

Conclusion

The differential diagnoses of prenatal lung lesions that contain unusual T2-hypointense elements include CPAM and CPMT. The T2-hypointense areas appear to correlate with increasing degree of immaturity at histology. None of the lesions significantly changed in size after prenatal administration of steroids. All cases with CPAM lesions did well despite persistent polyhydramnios and premature birth. The single case of CPMT, however, resulted in neonatal demise shortly after birth secondary to pulmonary hypoplasia. It is important that fetal radiologists, obstetricians and fetal surgeons alike are aware of these lesions so that appropriate diagnosing and parental counseling can be reached.

Normal pancreatic parenchymal thickness by CT in healthy children

Abstract

Background

Chronic pancreatitis is increasingly recognized in the pediatric population. Atrophy is an important, but qualitative, finding of chronic pancreatitis. To transition to a quantitative measure that can specifically define atrophy requires knowledge of normal pancreatic parenchymal bulk in children.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to define normal pancreatic thickness (linear measurements) at multiple anatomic locations in the pancreas of healthy children.

Materials and methods

This was an Institutional Review Board-approved, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant retrospective study. Three reviewers measured the thickness of the pancreas at four locations (head, neck, body, tail) on computed tomography (CT) examinations performed with intravenous contrast in children without a history of pancreatic disease. Measurements were made on 140 examinations, evenly distributed among 7 age groups (3–16.99 years) with 10 males and 10 females in each group. Agreement and bias between reviewers were assessed by intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) and Bland-Altman analyses. Correlation with age, height and weight were assessed with Spearman's rho (ρ).

Results

The mean (for 3 readers) thicknesses of the head, neck, body and tail were 1.3–2 cm, 0.7–1 cm, 0.9–1.6 cm and 1–1.6 cm, respectively, depending on patient age. Measurement agreement between reviewers was fair to good (ICC: 0.52–0.7). Bias between reviewers ranged from 0 to 3 mm. Pancreatic thickness was weakly to moderately correlated with age (ρ=0.39–0.52), height (ρ=0.44–0.61) and weight (ρ=0.51–0.64).

Conclusion

We have defined normal ranges for thickness of the pancreas at four locations, and have shown that these measurements depend on patient age and size. These data may be useful to more objectively define pancreatic atrophy in children with suspected pancreatic disease.

Temporal Changes in Ventilator Settings in Patients With Uninjured Lungs: A Systematic Review

In patients with uninjured lungs, increasing evidence indicates that tidal volume (VT) reduction improves outcomes in the intensive care unit (ICU) and in the operating room (OR). However, the degree to which this evidence has translated to clinical changes in ventilator settings for patients with uninjured lungs is unknown. To clarify whether ventilator settings have changed, we searched MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science for publications on invasive ventilation in ICUs or ORs, excluding those on patients 25% of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Our primary end point was temporal change in VT over time. Secondary end points were changes in maximum airway pressure, mean airway pressure, positive end-expiratory pressure, inspiratory oxygen fraction, development of ARDS (ICU studies only), and postoperative pulmonary complications (OR studies only) determined using correlation analysis and linear regression. We identified 96 ICU and 96 OR studies comprising 130,316 patients from 1975 to 2014 and observed that in the ICU, VT size decreased annually by 0.16 mL/kg (−0.19 to −0.12 mL/kg) (P

Perioperative Outcomes and Surgical Case Volume in Pediatric Complex Cranial Vault Reconstruction: A Multicenter Observational Study From the Pediatric Craniofacial Collaborative Group

BACKGROUND: Complex cranial vault reconstruction (CCVR) performed to treat craniosynostosis can be associated with significant blood loss, transfusion, and perioperative complications. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of CCVR surgical case volume on perioperative outcomes. We hypothesized that surgical case volume is not associated with differences in perioperative outcomes. The study primary outcome was total perioperative blood donor exposures. Secondary outcomes included the total perioperative transfusion volume, major complications, and intensive care unit and hospital length of stay. METHODS: The multicenter Pediatric Surgery Perioperative Registry was queried for infants and children undergoing CCVR between June 2012 and September 2016. Institutions were categorized into low, middle, or high surgical case volume groups based on tertiles of the average number of cases performed per month. Primary and secondary outcomes were analyzed with respect to these groupings. RESULTS: The query yielded 1814 CCVR cases from 33 institutions. Demographics were similar among the 3 study groups. An inverse relationship between surgical case volume and total perioperative blood donor exposures was observed (P

Point-of-Care Ultrasound Abnormalities in Late-Onset Severe Preeclampsia: Prevalence and Association With Serum Albumin and Brain Natriuretic Peptide

BACKGROUND: Pilot studies applying point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in preeclampsia indicate the presence of pulmonary interstitial edema, cerebral edema, and cardiac dysfunction. Laboratory markers of oncotic pressure (albumin) and cardiac dysfunction (brain natriuretic peptide [BNP]) may be abnormal, but the clinical application remains unclear. We investigated the prevalence of pulmonary interstitial syndrome (PIS), cardiac dysfunction, and increased optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) in late-onset preeclampsia with severe features. The primary aim was to examine the association between PIS or ONSD and maternal serum albumin level. The secondary aims were to explore the association between cardiac dysfunction and PIS, ONSD, BNP, and serum albumin level and between POCUS-derived parameters and a suspicious or pathological cardiotocograph. METHODS: Ninety-five women were enrolled in this prospective observational cohort study. A POCUS examination of lungs, heart, and ONSD was performed. PIS was defined as a bilateral B-line pattern on lung ultrasound and diastolic dysfunction according to an algorithm of the American Society of Echocardiography. ONSD >5.8 mm was interpreted as compatible with raised intracranial pressure (>20 mm Hg). Serum BNP and albumin levels were also measured. RESULTS: PIS, diastolic dysfunction, systolic dysfunction, and raised left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) were present in 23 (24%), 31 (33%), 9 (10%), and 20 (25%) women, respectively. ONSD was increased in 27 (28%) women. Concerning the primary outcome, there was no association between albumin level and PIS (P = .4) or ONSD (P = .63). With respect to secondary outcomes, there was no association between albumin level and systolic dysfunction (P = .21) or raised LVEDP (P = .44). PIS was associated with diastolic dysfunction (P = .02) and raised LVEDP (P = .009; negative predictive value, 85%). BNP level was associated with systolic (P

[Hearing aid provision in children].

Authors: Läßig AK, Kettern L, Kugelstadt S, Bohnert A Abstract Achieving high-quality hearing aid fitting in children is an interdisciplinary task and a challenge for all involved specialist disciplines. According to quality agreements (standards), comparative hearing aid fitting is mandatory prior to prescription. Furthermore, RECD measurements and, in older children, in-situ measurements should be applied on a regular basis for finetuning and adjustment of the hearing aid fitting. ENT physicians, phoniatricians and pediatric audiologists, pediatric acousticians, teachers of the hearing impaired, and special educational needs teachers should work together in an interdisciplinary approach. “AIR LEAK SYNDROME”: An Unusual Presentation of Foreign Body in the Airway

Abstract

Spontaneous onset pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax and subcutaneous emphysema are rare presentations of a foreign body in the airway. The possible mechanism for unexplainable and non traumatic subcutaneous emphysema can be attributed to "Air leak syndrome" following inhalation of foreign body in the airway.

Role of Proton Pump Inhibitors in Laryngopharyngeal Reflux: Clinical Evaluation in a North Indian Population

Abstract

There has been an escalation of patients presenting with symptoms of Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) in the otorhinolaryngology clinics due to life style and dietary changes. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of various proton pump inhibitors in the treatment of LPRD using Reflux symptom index (RSI) and Reflux finding score (RFS). This was a prospective study conducted from June 2016 to February 2017 with a total of 240 patients with symptoms and signs of LPR. The patients were divided into 5 groups. Each group was subjected to particular proton pump inhibitor. There were 124 males 116 females with a mean age 34.3 and rural to urban ratio being 11. After 3 months, RFS and RSI score within each group, improved significantly with Proton pump inhibitor therapy. In our study patients who were treated with omeprazole 20 mg twice daily had the highest improvement in laryngeal symptoms and laryngeal findings. We conclude emphasizing the effectiveness of proton pump inhibitors with incorporation of lifestyle modification in the successful management of LPRD.

The Prevalence and Causes of Auditory Neuropathy/Dys-synchrony (AN/AD) in Children with Hearing Impairment

Abstract

There are a wide variety of hearing impairments that part of it is auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony (AN/AD). So, the object of this study was determination the prevalence and causes of AN/AD in children with hearing impairment. This study was a descriptive cross-sectional survey. The sample size consisted of 105 hearing impairment children. All them were under hearing screening tests (tympanometry), distortion and transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs + TEOAE) and automated auditory brainstem response (AABR). If they were suspected to AN/AD, for complete diagnostic measurements were referred to our hospital. Four cases (8 ears) with AN/AD were diagnosed, which had an average age 37 months (SD = 8.67). So, the prevalence of AN/AD was 3.8 % among hearing impaired children. The findings of this study showed that there are the relationships between AN/AD and fluctuating hearing loss, acoustic reflex, high bilirubin, blood exchange after birth, neonatal intensive (NICU) care unit (P < 0.05). The simultaneous use of both ABR and OAE tests in the birth screening provide much more useful information than when each of these tests is used alone.

Preliminary study on chronic granulomatous disease in Sri Lanka

Abstract

Background

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare primary immunodeficiency of the phagocytic cells, which results in absent or diminished levels of microbicidal reactive oxygen species. The disease occurs due to germline mutations in the genes encoding the five subunits of NADPH oxidase complex. The present study is a pilot study to understand the clinical and genetic aspects of CGD in Sri Lanka.

Methods

Clinical records of thirteen CGD patients were analysed and compared with similar studies performed in different countries and regions to identify patterns in demographics, clinical manifestations and infectious agents. Genomic DNA and cDNA were analysed in eight patients to identify mutations in CYBB and NCF1 genes, thereby to ascertain the potential X-linked and autosomal recessive (AR) CGD patients.

Results

The onset of symptoms in the patient cohort was very early (mean 4.6 months) compared to 20 months in India and 23.9 months in Latin America. Similarly, the age at diagnosis was lower (mean 1.6 years after birth) compared to other studies; 4.5 years in India and 6.1 years in Europe. Pulmonary manifestations were the most common (85%), followed by skin/subcutaneous infections (77%) and lymphadenopathy (62%). The death rate of local patients (38%) was higher than other countries (India 35%, Europe 20%). Majority (77%) were treated for tuberculosis at some point in life. Genetic analysis confirmed six out of eight patients as X-linked CGD cases with mutations in CYBB gene. A novel splice site mutation was identified in P-07 at position c.141+6 which resulted in the deletion of entire exon 2. Two siblings (P-05 and P-06) from consanguineous parents, were identified with AR-CGD based on the homozygous GT deletion mutation in NCF1 gene.

Conclusions

The clinical presentation, manifestations and genetic subtypes in the local cohort, appear to be comparable with global trends. Mycobacterial infections should be investigated and treated with more prominence. Effective treatment options are required to control the high mortality rate.

POLLAR: Impact of air POLLution on Asthma and Rhinitis; a European Institute of Innovation and Technology Health (EIT Health) project

Abstract

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is impacted by allergens and air pollution but interactions between air pollution, sleep and allergic diseases are insufficiently understood. POLLAR (Impact of air POLLution on sleep, Asthma and Rhinitis) is a project of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT Health). It will use a freely-existing application for AR monitoring that has been tested in 23 countries (the Allergy Diary, iOS and Android, 17,000 users, TLR8). The Allergy Diary will be combined with a new tool allowing queries on allergen, pollen (TLR2), sleep quality and disorders (TRL2) as well as existing longitudinal and geolocalized pollution data. Machine learning will be used to assess the relationship between air pollution, sleep and AR comparing polluted and non-polluted areas in 6 EU countries. Data generated in 2018 will be confirmed in 2019 and extended by the individual prospective assessment of pollution (portable sensor, TLR7) in AR. Sleep apnea patients will be used as a demonstrator of sleep disorder that can be modulated in terms of symptoms and severity by air pollution and AR. The geographic information system GIS will map the results. Consequences on quality of life (EQ-5D), asthma, school, work and sleep will be monitored and disseminated towards the population. The impacts of POLLAR will be (1) to propose novel care pathways integrating pollution, sleep and patients' literacy, (2) to study sleep consequences of pollution and its impact on frequent chronic diseases, (3) to improve work productivity, (4) to propose the basis for a sentinel network at the EU level for pollution and allergy, (5) to assess the societal implications of the interaction. Molecular characterization and functional analysis of IL-12p40 from Chinese sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus) under biotic and abiotic stresses

Publication date: Available online 15 September 2018Source: Fish & Shellfish ImmunologyAuthor(s): Xiang Chen, Pengfei Wang, Chao Zhao, Lulu Yan, Heizhao Lin, Lihua QiuAbstractInterleukins are critical cytokines that are ubiquitously present in both vertebrates and invertebrates and constitute the front line of host innate immunity. Here, we identified and analyzed IL-12p40 from the Chinese sea bass Lateolabrax maculatus (LmIL-12p40). The LmIL-12p40 gene is expressed as a 1386-base pair transcript that encodes a polypeptide of 321 amino acids. Transcriptional expression analysis indicated that LmIL-12p40 mRNA was ubiquitously expressed in all tested tissues and had a comparatively high expression level in immune-associated tissues (head-kidney and intestines). Quantitative reverse-transcrip...

Physiopathological responses of sole (Solea senegalensis) subjected to bacterial infection and handling stress after probiotic treatment with autochthonous bacteria

This study aimed to evaluate the protective effects of four autochthonous bacteria isolated from juvenile sole (Solea senegalensis) intestine as dietary probiotic supplement against bacterial pathogen infection and handling/transport stressors. Growth performance and immune responses were evaluated after 85 days of feeding trial. Sole (IBW = 16.07 ± 0.11 g) were fed six experimental diets, a control diet (CTRL, without the dietary probiotic supplementation), and five diets supplemented with probiotic bacteria: PB1 (Shewanella hafniensis), PB2 (Enterococcus raffinosus), PB3 (Shewanella hafniensis + Arthrobacter soli), PB4 (Pseudomonas protegens + Arthrobacter soli) and PB5 (Shewanella hafniensis + Arthrobacter soli + Enterococcus raffinosus). All bacteria were selected ba...

Ontogeny of lymphoid organs and mucosal associated lymphoid tissues in meagre (Argyrosomus regius)

This study investigates the development of lymphoid organs and mucosal tissues in larval and juvenile meagre, Argyrosomus regius. For this purpose, meagre larvae were reared from hatch to the juvenile stage, under mesocosm conditions at 18–19 °C, using standard feeding sequences with live prey and artificial food. The kidney was evident upon hatch and included a visible pronephros, with undifferentiated stem cells and excretory tubules at 1 dph (3.15 ± 0.1 mm SL). The thymus was first detected 8 dph (4.49 ± 0.39 mm SL) and was clearly visible 12 dph (5.69 ± 0.76 mm SL), 33 dph (15.69 ± 1.81 mm SL) an outer thymocytic zone and inner epithelial zone were visible. The spleen was present 12 dph, located between exocrine pancreas and intestine and by 26 dph (11....

Transcriptome analysis and histopathology of black carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus) spleen infected by Aeromonas hydrophila

In this study, we analyzed the spleen of disease-resistant and susceptible black carp by RNA-seq. Overall, a total of 5243 terms were enriched in the gene ontology (GO) analysis, and 323 related pathways were found in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis. A total of 1935 differentially expressed genes were found and were primarily involved in cell adhesion, pathogen recognition, cellular immunity, cytokines, complement systems, and iron transport. Sixteen of the differently expressed genes involved in the immune response and the accuracy of the transcriptome data were further validated by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). We observed Tissue sections of the spleen infected with A. hydrophila and the control group and found that the spleen of the infecte...
