Antiemetic doses of dexamethasone and their effects on immune cell populations and plasma mediators of inflammation resolution in healthy volunteers

Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid that is widely used as an antiemetic medication in the perioperative period [1]. It is relatively inexpensive, long acting, with proven efficacy and recommended as a first line antiemetic [2]. However, in common with other glucocorticoids, dexamethasone has significant metabolic and immunological side effects. Endogenous glucocorticoids play a key function in controlling the immune response to stress, infection and injury [3]. Exogenous glucocorticoids are agents that have protean effects upon the human immune system and are widely employed in clinical practice [4].
