Cell death and inflammation are intimately linked during Yersinia infection. Pathogenic Yersinia inhibits the MAP kinase TGFβ-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) via the effector YopJ, thereby silencing cytokine expression while activating caspase-8–mediated cell death.
