Asthma is a highly prevalent chronic inflammatory lung disease in humans and comprises a range of disease subtypes that share similar clinical characteristics, including episodes of bronchoconstriction, airway hyperreactivity, mucus hyperproduction, and airway inflammation.1 Although many patients with asthma respond well to standard treatment with glucocorticoids and β2-agonists, a fraction of patients do not achieve disease control. The underlying mechanisms driving asthma require further investigation, particularly in patients with uncontrolled asthma who display the highest morbidity and symptom burden.
