17-beta estradiol protects esophageal epithelium from IL-13-induced barrier dysfunction and remodeling

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is more common in males than females for reasons that are not yet fully understood. We demonstrate significant dysregulation of the expression of the estrogen receptors and estrogen responsive gene network in EoE. We show that the sex hormone estrogen abrogates IL-13-induced esophageal architectural changes and barrier dysfunction via the downregulation of IL-13-induced Tyk2-STAT6 signaling. These studies suggest that differential estrogen signaling may explain gender-bias in EoE.
