Impact of organ prioritization for immunological sensitization and waiting times for heart transplantation

Sensitization refers to the presence of antibodies to human leukocyte antigens (HLA). The percentage calculated panel reactive antibody (CPRA) is a measure of sensitization with higher CPRA associated with increased unacceptable donor HLA, a smaller pool of potential donors, and longer waiting times for an HLA compatible donor.1 Sensitization rates in heart transplant candidates have increased with 1 in 5 patients having a CPRA>10% reported in the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) registry.
