Preparing for Ambulatory Care

The practice of medicine, in the broadest sense, followed a standard model prior to the 1990s. Most clinicians had a private office where they would see their patients. When a patient required hospitalization, the practitioner would typically continue to manage their patient while in the hospital. If the clinician was trained to perform needed procedures on their patient, they would do so; on the other hand, even if another practitioner such as a surgeon or obstetrician was needed, the patient's primary clinician would continue to support the patient during their time in the hospital.
