Estrogen receptor alpha signaling increases ILC2-mediated allergic airway inflammation

Sex hormones regulate asthma pathogenesis, providing a potential mechanism for female predominance in adult asthma. Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) produce IL-5 and IL-13, enhancing allergic airway inflammation. While testosterone attenuated ILC2-mediated airway inflammation, the role of estrogen receptor (ER) signaling is unknown. We hypothesized that ERα signaling increases ILC2-mediated airway inflammation.
