The latter cells are responsible of tumor initiation, metastasis formation, resistance to conventional therapies and disease recurrence. These relatively rare cells denominated cancer stem cells (CSCs) or cancer initiating cells (CICs) are defined based on self-renewing, multipotency and tumorigenicity.
