Mentorship: An Essential Element in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Education

According to 2016-2017 data from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, there are 102 accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) programs, and 1190 residents. This data also shows a total of 432 faculty members nationwide, all of whom are responsible for passing on knowledge, expertise and wisdom to the rising young surgeons of tomorrow. Similar to the days of Hippocrates, the artistry and science of surgery has been passed along through generations by means of a teacher-acolyte relationship.
