Why is it that burning mouth remains a 'syndrome'? This enigmatic and long described pain disorder is defined by several international organizations.2-4 In 1994, the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defined burning mouth syndrome (BMS) "(also known as glossodynia, glossopyrosis, oral dysesthesia, or stomatodynia) as a chronic oral mucosal pain or discomfort that has no identifiable causative lesions and is not caused by any other condition or disease".2 The IASP recognize the clinical features to include burning, tingling, pricking, or discomfort.
