Orthognathic surgery is a functional surgery that has a significant effect on facial aesthetics. Patients seeking facial surgeries have a higher incidence of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) than the general population. Patients with mental health disorders are less likely to be satisfied post-operatively and surgery may have a detrimental effect on their mental wellbeing. NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) recommends patients are screened for common mental health disorders prior to surgery but up to 80% of clinicians felt they had insufficient training.
