Introduction: For persons with deafness who cannot benefit from cochlear implants, including neurofibromatosis type 2 patients and a subset of cochlear implant users, some hearing can be restored by an array of stimulating electrodes implanted on the surface of or in their cochlear nucleus (CN). Major challenges are: (1) to develop a generalizable device design for the human cochlea nucleus, and (2) to determine how to modulate sound to electrical impulses in the auditory brainstem.
