Rapid Acquisition of Cytomegalovirus-Specific T Cells with a Differentiated Phenotype, in Non-Viremic Hematopoietic Stem Transplant Recipients Vaccinated with CMVPepVax

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is one of the largest and most complex of all known viruses, with a genome encoding approximately 165 genes. CMV is widely prevalent globally, but is immunologically controlled in healthy individuals with an intact immune system. The immune effector mechanisms involved do not eliminate the virus or preclude transmission, but can control viral replication and prevent disease. High frequencies of CMV specific CD8 T cells are detectable in the peripheral blood of healthy individuals [1]. (Source: Biology of Blood and Marrow Transplantation)
