The United States healthcare industry has been said to be one of the world's largest, and most inefficient information enterprise. This has been partly attributed to the fact that medical records are stored on paper which in turn means that they cannot be used to coordinate interdisciplinary care as easily, routinely measure quality and record and reduce medical errors1. Electronic medical record (EMR) resources have been available for the past four decades, but recently are becoming more and more prevalent within different medical settings across the United States.
