The role of human breast milk in protection against allergic diseases is debated and the mechanisms are unknown. While breast milk is known to confer passive immunity to the infant in the first weeks of life, little is known regarding its effect on induction of IgA class switch recombination (CSR) through cytokines, including TGF- β and APRIL, found in large quantities in breast milk.
