Right Vs. Left Orbital Volume Comparisons: a Direct Measure in 242 Orbits

Comprehensive knowledge of the bony orbit is a necessity for diagnosing and repair of orbital fractures due to trauma. Many studies have been performed to assess shape, contour, and volume of the bony orbit.1 Restoration of orbital volume in some patients is critical in achieving successful outcomes following injury to the orbit, particularly in cases of enophthalmos and diplopia. Anatomical and radiographic studies suggest orbital volumes of 25-30 cc, left to right differences of 2-7.5%, and person-to-person variability of 22%.
