In Part One, we learned the foundations of oral cancer and principles of treatment as described by prominent early surgeons and physicians from Hippocrates and Celsus to Henry T. Butlin the prominent head and neck surgeon. Part Two will commence with the turn of the 20th century, and focus on the evolution of neck dissection, adjunctive treatment options, and lead on to the reconstructive revolution with growing focus on quality of life. To report on the developments over the past century, an extensive search of the literature was carried out using EMBASE, Medline and PubMed and several thousand articles including non-English texts were vetted.
