Association of Prescription Opioid Use for Chronic Pain Syndromes with Asthma and Allergy

Opioids have, in addition to analgesic properties, immune altering effects including upregulation of Th2 responses. Whether this has clinical expression in altering asthma and allergic responses has not been determined. We hypothesize that in patients with chronic pain conditions, there is an increased prevalence of asthma and allergy when prescribed opioid medications.
