Emergency room evaluation and observation of patients who have used an epinephrine auto injector to treat an allergic food reaction at home is the standard of care. Requiring patients to go to the ER after epinephrine injection often deters families from administering epinephrine. Withholding or delaying treatment with epinephrine increases the risk of death from anaphylaxis. We hypothesized that this standard could be modified to prompt the early and more frequent use of epinephrine during an allergic reaction without decreasing patient safety.
