Although Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) is associated with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), causative role and mechanism of MRSA leading to chronic inflammation seen in CRS has yet to be elucidated. Nasal epithelium provides the first line of defense in differentiating pathogenic from commensal bacteria. Increased permeability of nasal epithelium, decreased antimicrobial production and impaired mucociliary clearance are features of CRS. Regenerating islet-derived protein 3 gamma (Reg3g) is a C-type lectin with antimicrobial activity against MRSA. (Source: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology)
