Neither haloperidol nor ziprasidone, medications commonly used to treat psychosis, had any benefit over placebo in treating patients for delirium in the intensive care unit (ICU), according to astudy published Monday in theNew England Journal of Medicine."For more than 40 years, intravenous antipsychotic medications have been used to treat delirium in hospitalized patients," wrote E.W. Ely, M.D., of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and colleagues.
