Risk of asthma onset after natural and surgical menopause: Results from the French E3N Cohort

The most compelling argument for a role of sex hormones in asthma is that asthma is more frequent in boys in childhood and that there is a gender switch around puberty [1,2]. Features of the women's reproductive life, such as menstrual cycles, age of menarche, pregnancy, parity or use of oral contraception have been found also to be associated with asthma [3,4]. Studies have shown that the incidence of asthma, in particular non-allergic asthma, was higher in women as compared to men over all the reproductive years [2,5]. (Source: Maturitas)
